Height: 8′-10′ Spread: 6′-8′. Thought to be a naturally occurring hybrid between A. arbutifolia and A. melanocarpa, occurring in the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Displays hybrid vigor as it grows taller than both its parents. White flowers bloom in terminal clusters in early May, followed by purple fruit in fall that is very high in antioxidants. We conducted an informal taste test, and the fruit of Purple Chokeberry in our opinion was superior to that of other fruiting Aronia selections such as ‘Viking’ and ‘Nero’. Outstanding red fall color. Full sun. Zone 4.
